Computing

At Bournes Green, we recognise that technology is everywhere and will play a pivotal part in children’s lives. Therefore, we want to educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly, and safely. We want pupils to be masters of technology and not slaves to it. Technology is everywhere and will play a pivotal part in students' lives. We want to model and educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly, and safely. Computing starts in EYFS with children exploring toys and how they move and make sounds. They learn to operate simple equipment and complete a simple program on a computer. They recognise that a range of technologies are used both at home and in school. Children are given the opportunity to explore these technologies. Building our knowledge in this subject will allow pupils to effectively demonstrate their learning through creative use of technology and we recognise that technology can allow pupils to share their learning in creative ways. We also understand the accessibility opportunities technology can provide for our pupils. Our knowledge rich curriculum is balanced with the opportunity for pupils to apply their knowledge creatively which in turn helps our pupils become skilful computer scientists.

Computing is a subject that not only stands alone but is an integral part of learning that is woven throughout our curriculum. Computing is a significant part of daily life and children should be at the forefront, with a thirst for knowledge and opportunities to explore new technology. Computing within our school provides a wealth of learning opportunities and transferrable skills across other curriculum subjects.

Through the study of computing, children will be able to develop a wide range of fundamental skills, knowledge and understanding that will equip them for the rest of their life. Children are taught in the art form of ‘Computational Thinking’ in order to provide them essential problem-solving skills that will enable them to participate effectively and safely in the digital world beyond our gates.
