Curriculum Statement

Intent

We passionately believe that all pupils are entitled to receive an engaging and challenging curriculum that inspires a love of learning. The BGJS curriculum enables our pupils to develop their natural curiosity, make strong links between subjects and achieve to their full potential. This curriculum supports the whole child in their primary learning journey to become successful, confident individuals, who make a positive contribution to the community and society - both now and in the future.

Through our core values: Pride, Perseverance, Excellence & Respect, we create an environment where the emotional, physical, academic, social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of each child is considered and planned for.

Our exciting curriculum is mapped and linked to the National Curriculum expectations and prepares and equips children with the skills, knowledge and understanding for life.

For the delivery of many subjects, we select and adapt six Cornerstones projects, one per half term, for each year group. The approach for these lessons, together with the content, is varied and stimulating.  Power Maths is also used throughout BGJS.

Implementation

At Bournes Green Junior School, we have used the National Curriculum alongside specific year group half-termly / termly themes, to allow our children to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to make progress. We recognise that the curriculum encompasses all areas of learning, and we provide learning which is broad and balanced and makes clear links across all subjects to give children a clear rationale for completing their work.

Wherever possible, Reading, Writing and Maths activities are linked to other subjects within all areas of the curriculum, so that children are confident in the links between all the subjects.

We are dedicated to each of our pupil’s personal development. Our children can experience a wide range of enrichment opportunities, such as trips, Outdoor Learning and extra-curricular clubs & squads. In summary, we provide the children with vast learning experiences outside the classroom environment which helps enhance their understanding, school experience and learning.

Impact

Pupils leave BGJS with a secure understanding of the academic content from the KS2 National Curriculum. BGJS pupils can clearly talk about their learning experiences.

As well as engrained, embedded kindness and treatment of others, we aim for our children to leave with confidence and ambition. This allows them to comfortably make the next step to secondary school and beyond.
