Recently in Beech class, we have spent some of our afternoons learning about Southend Pier. The children have been very interested to see how the pier has changed throughout history, learning about different events that took place (like the fires) and what has made it one of the biggest attractions in Southend throughout the years. Although an incredibly engaging history topic, it is also the basis of our Frame- it pieces. Based upon the children’s amazing suggestions, we agreed it would be a good decision to use just a location for the theme of our writing. This means that the children have free range with where their texts go. We might be reading stories based in the location, or read descriptions about it, or poems or learn about the factual history of the place. Children are able to briefly touch upon the location and go in whatever direction they want to from there. So, let’s see what the location of Southend Pier can create in Beech class’ minds! I cannot wait to see where they go. Some of the photos below show us mind mapping our initial ideas!
