IMPRESSIONISM AND EXPRESSIONISM!

Over the past two weeks since the half term break we have been learning more about two significant art movements of the 20th century.

Over the past two weeks since the half term break we have been learning more about two significant art movements of the 20th century. In week one, we learnt all about the impressionists and focused on the work of Monet. On the Tuesday of week one we learnt all about colour theory and then applied what we had learnt to create experimental colour collages along with two different pieces of art in the style of Monet. During our art day we watched videos about how Monet's style was unique and how the impressionists created their art using brush and paint mixing techniques that had not been seen in the art world until this point in history. In week 2 we have been learning about expressionism and have looked at the work of artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Jackson Pollock and Van Gogh. The children then applied what they had learnt from the theory lesson into two pieces of artwork. Firstly,  a sculpture in the style of Giacometti, who is famous for his walking people sculptures (see pictures!) and a self portrait that expressed their mood and emotions in the style of an expressionist painter.

In English we have loved reading Kensuke's kingdom and have just got to the part where we meet the mysterious Kensuke. We used the book as inspiration to write some excellent narratives based on being caught in a storm at sea just like Michael and his family. The results have been excellent so feel free to come in and  read them at the next book look.

Have a great couple of weeks!
