Spruce Class had a rather smelly day at Chelmsford Water Treatment Education Centre learning all about the way our water and waste gets recycled.
Did you know the cleaned waste is then used as a fertilizer to help our crops grow in the fields?
During the morning we learnt about saving water and found out some of the strange objects that get flushed down our toilets. Then we made a sewage soup, which included; mud, washing powder, fats, oils, baby wipes, cotton buds, a yellow substance and even a rather solid brown substance that nobody wanted to touch or smell!
After lunch we then went on a tour of the facility and found out how our waste is recycled. Boy was it smelly!
Our last magical activity of the day was turning dirty water back into clean water which involved lots of filtering using items such as ladies tights, cotton wool, plastic sieves and filter papers.
A big thank you to all our parent helpers, especially Mr. Carver who was very nearly sick on numerous occasions!
