Spruce Class recently enjoyed a fantastic and informative Stone Age Day with a local expert. All the children looked great in their costumes.

During the morning they learnt about the beginnings of man. Half the group became Neanderthals whilst the other half became humans. They enjoyed trying to catch a mammoth, how the hunter gatherers acquired their next meal and how to make fire with two sticks.

There were plenty of fascinating artefacts to look at from the Stone Age and beyond.  The children were lucky enough to handle reindeer hide, animal furs, tools and weapons made out of stone and from animal bones.

Later on the class we were able to find out about the building of Stonehenge, the children had the opportunity to recreate their own miniature Stonehenge by working together.

Finally as the children looked forward into the Iron Age, they found out about mining and took part in a re-enactment of mining crawling through an imaginary mine.

Everyone involved learnt a great deal and it was a day that the children will not forget.
