Art

Art at Bournes Green Infant School is an inclusive and valued subject. We do not prescribe outcomes, instead we believe the role of the teacher is to introduce key skills, materials and ideas to the pupils in such a way that each pupil can then explore their own creativity and gain confidence in using and a range of styles and techniques.

Art is a subject with creativity at its heart. Pupils are taught to use sketch books to allow for skills to be revisited and underpin the learning process. Our children are given opportunities to make creative choices and experiment with a range of media. The children develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

Our children are introduced to and inspired by a great and diverse range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between practices and disciplines and making links to their own work. Creativity and uniqueness is celebrated. There is an emphasis placed on individuality and children are given the freedom to explore art using their imaginations. Children embed the key art and design skills needed to allow them to produce inventive pieces of art. Through all of this, individual pupils learn to make appropriate choices regarding materials and processes and are empowered towards making a personal, creative response.

Artistic vocabulary is taught explicitly throughout the curriculum. Using Art and Design books, children develop their ideas, describe similarities and differences and make links to their own work. Throughout their time with us, children develop their skills and techniques and are given opportunities to make creative choices and experiment. Art gives the children at Bournes Green Infant School an opportunity to express themselves and enrich their cultural and historical understanding.
